Funkaari Series: Natasha Zubair

As valuing craftsmanship is the core purpose of Markhor, we wish to highlight some of the most praiseworthy and thought provoking artworks of the local artists, to stay true to our beliefs and vision.

In our first series of FUNKAARI, featuring Natsaha Zubair, an uber talented photographer, graphic designer and stationery maker based in Lahore, Pakistan. We recently caught up with Natasha Zubair to find out her inspiration, the things she is reading, and how she was coping with the pandemic.

How did you get started in photography? When did you first get serious about being a photographer?

I’ve enjoyed taking photos since I was in 6th grade. Before I asked my parents for an iPod or a phone, I wanted a point and shoot camera. However I never wanted to pursue it professionally, I actually wanted to be a graphic designer (which I am as well). It wasn’t until my second year at National College of Arts that I realized that I could pursue multiple things at one time. That’s when I started to push myself towards it and eventually all these doors of opportunities opened up for me.

How have the events of the past year affected your creativity? How are you coping with the pandemic?

I think I’ve had my ups and downs like most people. I had my own personal health issues throughout this entire period so there was a point where I let go completely and just took a break to heal. So the pandemic hasn’t affected my creativity but as an artist it’s surely given me the opportunity to recharge which I hadn’t been able to do before and I think that has somehow translated into my workflow and attitude. But honestly I can’t sit for too long. So even when I’m healing, I’m brainstorming, writing down ideas here and there.

What inspires you?

People’s work ethic. I’m a sucker for kindness. I really love artists, the way they communicate and their work flow a lot more than I like their actual work. It’s just the entire process from start to finish that is inspiring to me.

What was your happiest moment of life?

I’m thinking about them and they’re all just moments spent with my parents and my brother. It’s really just that simple. Being at peace, at home, with my family whenever we’re together.

Which are your favorite Pakistanis artists?

Shayan Sherwani, Hashim Ali, Mahoor Jamal, Ali Sethi to name a few!

What is your relationship with footwear?

I’ve always loved footwear, especially sneakers. Clothes have always been my least favorite thing to shop for because of my insecurities. So sneakers were always something that made me happy and confident, I would always gravitate towards them.

What do you know about Markhor?

That’s it’s a really cool footwear brand! I first heard about them through Sidra and Waqas’s story on HONY. I then remember seeing those fluorescent holographic sandals and being taken a back when I did a deep dive into the branding and design work.

What is the most interesting project you've worked on and why?

Probably all editorials I used to do at my old house. They were always extremely unplanned and spontaneous and somehow they’re the ones I’m the most proud of. It’s the shoots that have zero production that have the most soul!

What are you listening to, reading, and watching?

I’m listening to a lot of Billie Eillish these days, reading up on masters programs and catching up on the latest season of You!
